Vishaka Child Development Centre or at that time Vishaka Children home was founded in the year 1952 by a group of philanthropist in Kalutara Headed by late Sir Cyril De Soysa, a renowned Social worker, a leading lawyer, who graced the position of Chairman, Kalutara Urban Council, former Senator and last not least a successful entrepreneur.

The primary task in our mission is to create a positive impact in the lives of Sri Lankan female children who lose parental care at a very young age. Alomost all our children at this centre are being directed by Law Courts through the Probation department. They are mostly orphaned abandoned, abused or destitute.

The Visaka Child Development Centre protects the rights of the aforesaid children by providing them with basic facilities and environment of a loving home with the warmth of a caring mother (Resident Matron) to develop their education, personality, talents, skills and self – esteem.

In pursuance of this ideology as spelt out in our vision statement, we consider educating them is most important and essential to mould them as good citizens in the society.

Hence we send all children of 5 to 18 years of age to recognize government schools in the city where they continue their studies up to GCE A/L, a highly competitive examination to gain entry to the University.

Secondly we do pay more attention to the emotional well being of these children who have gone through the traumatic experience of losing their primary care givers in life and being left alone in this society without a mother or father or a family to call their own.

Under these circumstances it is vital to build up their emotional stability to become better adults in our society. Then they begin to learn the value of love and relationship. We are engaged in this arduous task with dedication.

We are committed to run this institution as a non – partisan and non – profitable organization, free of all types of discrimination. We give equal opportunities to all our children no matter what their aspirations may be as long as it is ethical and socially acceptable.

Visaka Child Development Centre is a government approved institution listed under the Ministry of women and children affairs and is affiliated to the department of Probation and Child Care of the provincial Council of Western province of Sri Lanka. It enjoys a rich and successful history of 72 years of working and services for children in SRI LANKA.
